Sexual Reproduction
Many organisms, including most animals and plants, reproduce sexually. In SEXUAL REPRODUCTION, a male and a female organism combine their genetic material to produce an offspring. Unlike asexual reproduction, the offspring is unique and different from each parent.
During sexual reproduction, a male SEX CELL, called a SPERM, and a female sex cell, called an EGG, join together. The joining together of a sperm and an egg is called FERTILIZATION, and the cell that forms from fertilization is called a ZYGOTE. The zygote will eventually grow and develop into an organism through mitosis and cell division.
